African Adventure: Part 4

Mar 3, 2014

Well, this post is going to wrap up my series from Africa!  It was quite an adventure and I’m so happy I was able to share it with you all!

Our last leg of the trip was in Cape Town, which is a super cool city!  I’m always a fan of a port city, and with the entire town laid out around the marina I was in heaven.  We ate at the most amazing restaurants (including Test Kitchen and Nobu), shopped in the wonderful little craft markets, took some leisurely drives down to the Cape of Good Hope, did *not* play with the adorable penguins at Boulder’s Penguin Colony (I was told if I hugged one of the penguins I would be bitten, although I was tempted…), watched the playful seals while eating lunch on the water, and took the cable car up to the top of Table Mountain for breathtaking views of all of Cape Town!  Our guide also took us through one of the largest shantytowns in Cape Town on our way to the airport on our last day, which was a reality check for us all after such a luxurious trip.  It reminded us all that there is still so much inequality in South Africa, with one third of its people living in poverty.  We also visited an orphanage and were invited to play with some absolutely precious babies and toddlers, although I have chosen not to share those photos publicly.  The absolutely incredible family I traveled to Africa with had arranged for a very large donation of much-needed supplies (clothing, food, medicine, and their favorite — school supplies) to be delivered to this orphanage, and it brought happy tears to my eyes to see how their generous gift would touch so many deserving lives.  I left Africa with tears rolling down my cheeks, forever changed by this majestic continent.

If you haven’t seen my previous posts from Africa, please click here for Part 1, here for Part 2, and here for Part 3 😀
