This month I decided to take you on a trip to the rooftop of the Met, my favorite museum in NYC. Every Summer, the Met commissions a different artist to create an installation for visitors to enjoy while taking in the beautiful views of Central Park and sipping delicious (and expensive) cocktails. This year, Dan Graham “created a new form of quixotic landscape architecture that combines nature and community within a city environment,” the museum’s chairman of modern and contemporary art said. “It is work that draws paradoxically on formal 18th-century Northern European gardens, while also referencing the glossy sleekness of corporate skyscrapers and the American suburban vernacular.”
To get to the rooftop of the museum, I walked the two blocks over from my apartment, snapped some photos of some visitors sitting on the steps (the steps are always covered with people lounging, sketching, chatting with friends, or just people watching). I walked quickly through the Egyptian Wing (one of my favorites), through the sculpture gallery, and took the elevator up to the roof. I just love the view from there, breathing in all the fresh air and looking out over the large expanse of Central Park.
Psst! Now that you’ve joined me for a little culture at the Met, go check out the next photographer in our group’s take on the “30 minutes” project! It’s Kristi Burton, a fabulous and sweet photographer from Utah! Her photos are always so so beautiful, I know you’ll love them, too 🙂

Great images Colleen! Looks like a great little trip 🙂
I think this is my favorite 30 Minutes from you. I love all your perspectives and am totally enamoured by your captures of the museum goers. Very very cool…also, do you seriously live 2 blocks from the Met?
Oh Colleen these are so wonderful. I swear I have always wanted to see New York since I was a teenager, and every month I can’t tell you how much I love your posts. I can’t choose a favorite because I love them all! Great Post. 🙂
Absolutely beautiful. I feel like I visit NY every time you post. I love seeing it through your eyes.
AHHH! What an entirely new feel I have when looking at your photos. A beautiful familiarity which I’ve dreamed of for so many years.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos, Colleen. I don’t think my awe and wonder at what you capture will ever end. Beautiful moments captured here. ONce again, you took me right there and let me enjoy the view with you.
No wonder you love it! WOW. I was wondering what the red reflection was in your spotlight photo. It has such a magical quality because you can’t see where it comes from. Now I see. What great patience and positioning … and that glass! … how fun. What wonderful images. Thanks for sharing!
I LOVE your 30 minute posts, you capture the very essence it seems of your beautiful city! I know I’ve said before that I’m itching to come to NY but I really am, and the Met would be right up there on my places to go! The shots in the glass – genius!!!
These are completely mesmerising Colleen! What beautiful, awe inspiring shots. The reflections are my absolute favourites. xxx
These are fantastic Colleen!! I can’t believe you live so close to there. I love your eye and amazing talent at capturing NY uniquely to your perspective. Can i come visit and we can go there for a day? 🙂 xo
Stunning photos Colleen. I want to go and sit on those steps. And oh by the way, I LOVE the silhouette of the skyline – just stunning. The reflections are awesome as well. I have just got to get up there one day.
I love love love this post. I love all the characters you captured and the many ways you used the location to create interesting images. This really brings that feeling of the pleasures of a large and rich museum. We don’t have anything permanent like this in Istanbul and I feel the lack of it a lot, especially as my parents really made the most of London’s free museums. Some of the sculptures you photographed are really moving and I adore the young artist. A spectacular post!
